John Trott is an experienced Independent Chair for Domestic Homicide Reviews having been trained by Frank Mullane (CEO of AAFDA) and Professor. Jane Monckton Smith in April 2016.

John has worked for over thirty four years in the domestic abuse sector. He retired from the Devon and Cornwall Police having served as the Detective Chief Inspector and head of the Cornwall Police Public Protection Unit. John currently works with victims and survivors of domestic abuse and additionally he delivers consultancy and training within his specialist knowledge areas of domestic abuse, coercion and control and stalking. He has a vast amount of experience of overseeing reviews, Internal Management Reviews and of working in partnership with Local Government and other outside and third sector agencies. This has included working on the review teams for Domestic Homicide Reviews, Serious Case Reviews and SCIE (Social Care Institute for Excellence) reviews and piloting Cornwall Foundation Trust & Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Safeguarding Adults Board Learning Together Case Review Pilot, "The Reliable Tradesman." 

John has a wealth of experience working in partnership with statutory and voluntary organisations and a sound understanding of partnership priorities, competing agendas and organisational politics together with a high level of leadership and management background. He is an accredited Chair for MAPPA and MARAC, an accredited Senior Investigating Officer (up to and including murder) and an accredited Tier V Interview Advisor with over 28 years police experience mainly as a detective. Additionally, he is an accredited Hostage and Crisis Negotiator and Coordinator having completed that role in addition to his normal police role for 18 years dealing with suicide intervention, armed sieges and kidnap and extortion. As a result he has excellent investigative, interviewing and communication skills and is adept at authoring synoptic and detailed reports collated from various sources of information.

With specialist and excellent knowledge and experience of domestic abuse, coercive control, stalking and Honour Based Abuse, John also has extensive knowledge of the Safeguarding Children and Safeguarding Adults arena having sat on the Cornwall Local Safeguarding Children's Board (LSCB), Safeguarding Adults Board (SAB) and the South West Regional SAB. His knowledge is current and he is conversant with the Wood Report, Care Act, SCIE Guidance, Working Together 2018, Adult Safeguarding Intercollegiate Document for Health Care Staff 2018, the DHR Guidance 2016 and guidance and protocols in existence for other agencies. John keeps abreast of academic research and he is a member of Association of Child Protection Professionals (AoCPP). He has an excellent understanding of risk, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and adults having led numerous Safeguarding Children, Adults at Risk and Domestic Abuse investigations up to and including homicide.

John has chaired 8 DHR and Child Learning Reviews.
